Tips for making your fast food experience a healthier one
Fast food isn’t often considered a healthy option, and therefore we don’t make much attempt to improve our diet as it relates to fast food, but don’t be too quick to write off your fast food order as a guilty pleasure, as the frenetic pace of modern life is making fast food more of a necessity than an indulgence.
With that in mind we’ve got some tips to help you make your fast food that little better for you, and maybe encourage a few other healthy eating habits along the way.
Tip 1 – Eat at least 1 portion of fruit or vegetables per day
Supplementing just a portion of your diet for a healthy dose of fruit or veg will fill you up faster and give you more of the nutrients you need. Especially true if your ordering fast food that is typically higher in calories than in nutrients.
Tip 2 – Avoid Trans Fats
A common myth is that fat is bad for you. The reality is that fat might just be the best thing for you, and nothing really can replace it in a healthy person’s diet. While the amounts of fat we consume are always a concern when eating fast food, the types of fat we consume is also a huge factor. If you are eating deep fried food try to enquire about the type of fat it’s cooked in. Be aware that a lot of American style side orders like chicken strippers, breaded jalapenos and mozzarella sticks are prepared using trans-fats, and you won’t be able to avoid them even if they are cooked in low-trans- fat cooking oil.
Tip 3 – Ask your chef to prepare your food to your liking
Chefs have their own way of preparing your food, but that doesn’t mean they’re not flexible. Ask to make some changes to your order; if you’re ordering a salad, ask for your dressing to be on the side so you can make the decision on how much to add.
Tip 4 – Eat less salt
Unfortunately sodium is a major health risk and is linked to heart disease, and hypertension. Even food we don’t consider as fast isn’t safe from this assumption. It’s hard to get away from, but not impossible. When ordering your takeaway, consider the amount of salt already in your food before asking to add salt for seasoning. Remember, the less salt you eat, the less you need, as your taste buds will eventually adapt meaning you will need less salt for seasoning your food to your liking.
